Long Term Radon Gas Test Kit

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends that you test your
home at least once per year. Although short-term radon gas detectors such as
our Radon Gas Test Kit are excellent for
initial screening (eg, real estate transactions) to determine if potentially
harmful levels of radon exist in your home, radon levels can vary dramatically
over a short period of time. If your initial test results from the short-term
detectors warrant a long-term follow-up test, an extended (3-12 month) test
with this kit is recommended for more conclusive results.
What is Radon?
Radon is an invisible and odorless radioactive gas which occurs naturally
from decaying uranium beneath the earth’s surface. Though you cannot see,
smell, or taste radon, it is there and may be a problem in your home or office.
Radon gas rises through the soil and seeps through cracks, holes, and drain
pipes in the foundation or basement of your home and office. Radon gas can be
found all over the United States and according to the EPA, 1 out of every 15
homes in the United States has high levels of radon gas.
Why is Radon Bad for You?
Radon gas contains radioactive particles which get trapped in your lungs every
time you breathe. As the radon gas particles break down, they release bursts
of radiation that damage or destroy your lung tissue which causes lung cancer,
and long-term exposure may even cause death. In fact, the EPA has estimated
that radon causes 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year and that radon gas is
the #1 cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.
Instructions
Selecting the Test Location
According to the EPA, radon testing should be conducted in the lowest lived-in
area of your home that is regularly used for 8-10 hours per day. Make sure your
test location is a room where the PRO-LAB Professional Long-Term Radon Gas Detector
will not be exposed to drafts from vents, doors or windows. Do not place the
detector in a kitchen, bathroom, crawl space, furnace room, closet, or laundry
room. Do not place the detector in direct sunlight or near any heat source such
as a fireplace or heater.
Hang or place the detector at least three feet away from exterior doors or
windows and at least two feet off the floor. Leave the detector in place and
undisturbed for three to twelve months.
Taking the Test
When you are ready to begin the test, cut or tear open the clear bag that
contains the black detector. As soon as you open the bag the detector is "on"
and the test has begun. Record the radon detector serial number, test location, and
the date you started the test. After filling out this information, detach the
radon data card and put it into a safe place. You will need the data card in
order to complete the test.
Ending the Test
Record the date the test ended on the included PRO-LAB Long-Term Radon Data
Card. Make sure your data card is now completely filled out including the other
required information such as your name, address, etc. If you leave out any information,
your detector cannot be analyzed.
Place the PRO-LAB Long-Term Radon Gas Detector and the Long-Term Radon Data
Card into the enclosed “Business Reply” pre-paid postage envelope and mail immediately
within 24 hours of the completion of the test.
Test results are free for any non-New Jersey residents.
Special Note: If you are a New Jersey
resident, there is a $10.00 fee for the New Jersey Department
of Environmental Protection Agency's Administrative Costs. Please remit
a check in the amount of $10 made payable to PRO-LAB with your Radon Gas Detector and Data Card.
