About the Winix PlasmaWave™
How PlasmaWave™ Works
Basic Technology: As it exits the air-cleaning unit, filtered air passes through a corona discharge (a type of electric pulse). This process creates BOTH negative and positive ions - which is air in a plasma state.
In Phase Two, the plasma combines with naturally occurring water vapor to form Hydroxyl Radicals (OH, unstable molecules stripped of hydrogen and oxygen atoms).
Hydroxyls attack airborne pollutants that include viruses, bacteria, germs, odors, and chemical gases (VOCs).
The Pollutants Are Destroyed in the process while the Hydroxyls reform into water vapor (H2O) or other harmless air molecules.
PlasmaWave™ produces NO OZONE or other harmful by-products as it emulates the way nature cleans the air.
Smart SensorsWinix PlasmaWave™ Air Cleaners or, air purifiers, are equipped with Digital Smart Sensors that automatically monitor air quality in your room. As air pollutant level increases, fan speeds will adjust automatically – True “SET-and-Forget” operation!
Automatically detects the presence of unusually high levels of dust in the air and adjust fan speed accordingly. It will return to previous setting when excessive dust has been removed.
Automatically detects the presence of intense odors in the air and adjust fan speed accordingly. It will return to previous setting when excessive odors have been neutralized.
Light Sensor (9000 series only)
When the room is darkened, automatically activates Sleep mode to ensure continuosly quiet and energy-efficient operation. It changes its mode back to normal Auto mode in case of the presensce of light.
DREXEL PLASMA INSTITUTE
The Drexel Plasma Institute is a multi-disciplinary research center coordinating the efforts of professors in engineering, medicine, biomedical engineering, and arts and sciences. The Institute is working on new plasma approaches to material treatment, fuel conversion, environmental control and medical applications, as well as fundamental and applied research into new and nontraditional areas of plasma and combustion science. Institute research is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Air Force, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and the National Science Foundation, as well as by industrial partners.
Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat is Plasma?
Plasma is a fourth state of matter (neither a liquid, a gas, nor a solid) in which molecules are broken down to their most basic level. How long does the filter last?
This depends on the conditions and level of pollutants in the room. In relatively clean conditions a filter may be effective for as much as 18 or even 24 months. However in relatively unclean conditions (ie: presence of dust, pollen, smoke and other pollutants), a filter may need to be replaced more frequently.
Because Winix PlasmaWave™ Air Cleaners feature smart sensors which adjust the fan speed based on real conditions, it is best to let the machine alert you as to when it is time to change the filter. Can I clean (wash) the filters?
The pre-filter and washable carbon filter found in some models can be cleaned simply by rinsing them in water and allowing them to air dry. This will help extend the life of the HEPA filter and improve the effectiveness of the air cleaner.
HEPA filters cannot be washed and will need to be replaced when the “change filter” indicator is lit.
Refer to the owner’s manual for more information on how to remove and replace the filters.
With the power “on”, open the front panel and locate the “change filter reset” button on the inside. Press and hold this button for a few seconds until you here a “beep”. The “change filter” light should go out and the unit has been properly reset. It says “for a room 280 sq ft”, can it clean a bigger room?
Yes! The 280 square foot rating was designated by AHAM (the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers) as a way to compare air cleaners. However, the Winix PlasmaWave™ Air Cleaner can be effective for considerably larger areas than this certification might imply. Even in larger rooms, the air will eventually be circulated and passed through the air cleaner, this also explains the importance of having an air cleaner with a fan.
Performance measurement is not an exact science because room conditions can have an effect on the efficiency of an air cleaner – levels and types of pollutants present, air flow and ventilation of the room, and the height of the ceilings, for example, can all have an effect on the efficiency of the air cleaner.

Most people find their Winix Air cleaner amazing. The most successful marketing we can do for Winix Air products is letting you know what top allergists and our customers are saying
"My wife has severe allergies and even though she is a clean freak, up until now we could not find anything that could help her. We own two dogs and the combination of the odor and dander was just debilitating. We bought this product about 3 weeks ago. After the 3rd day the change was noticeable. Our house does not smell like dogs and she has not sneezed once (she used sneeze at least 50 times from the time she entered the house in the afternoons until she went to bed!) She also used to take 3 different allergy pills, now the combination of just Zertec and this product has literally eliminated her allergies and asthma.”

“Well I just purchased this air purifier after extensive research on-line--this machine seemed like it was the best value and quality for its price range. There are other machines ranked a bit higher but they will cost at least $100-$200 more and it didn't seem like you would be getting that much more value. I decided if we liked this one in our bedroom it would still be cheaper to buy a second one for our living room than to buy one of the other brand's larger and more expensive versions. It came today and within an hour my boyfriend and I both seemed to already notice a difference. The air feels fresher and cleaner--and smells better. Not to mention it is really quiet--even on high. The only mode that is a bit more noticeable is Turbo and even that just sounds like a fan turned on high. It was easy to set-up and is easy to use. I will have to check back in again after a longer period of use to report on whether we experience a long term noticeable difference on our allergies."

"It's so quiet (even on high setting) and it really helps eliminate the dust. It also detects odors of all kinds: shampoo scent, bad breath (kid-tested), scented candles. The turbo setting is loud, so I don't use that unless absolutely needed. I bought another one for someone with bad allergies, and she said it's great!”

"We agree with other reviewers in that dust and odors seem to be much more in control since we purchased. Initially we didn't run machine since we live in a high humidity area. We have now begun to use on a regular basis and are pleased. We have three animals that move about freely and have run the machine in the areas that are heavily used. We also have a wood stove that contributes to the dust factor. Will need to see how it affects our comfort after a full season of use.”
"I was a little worried about this unit because of all the glowing reviews . Now after having the unit and running it I am pleased to report how happy I am with it. My wife retired in Dec. and I have been retired for two years she is a smoker and I have allergeis . She has a craft room in are basement and smokes down there well the smoke came upstairs and I was sneezing all the time. Since I got the unit and have had it running the air is cleaner even when am downstairs here on the computer . I have notice the difference now maybe I can keep my wife and healthier lungs."
